Biologist III/Biocompatibility

Background:
This individual will be a key member of the Toxicology Team, responsible for performing the technical aspects of Sponsor studies in compliance with the protocol, company standard operating procedures (SOPs), global GLP, ISO, and animal welfare regulations, and AAALAC guidelines.  The candidate will work primarily with small laboratory animals including mice, rats, guinea pigs, and rabbits.  Ability and willingness to be cross-trained to work with larger animals (dogs and primates) is desirable.  Candidate should have previous experience in medical-device testing.


Job Requirements:
1. At least a BA/BS in biology or a biologically-related discipline (AALAS certification highly desirable)
2. Excellent English verbal and written communication skills to be able to clearly communicate with other staff members, clients and auditors; a reading and speaking knowledge of Chinese (Mandarin) highly desirable.
3. Strong animal research background and good problem-solving and quantitative skills
4. At least 3 years of work experience post-graduation, preferably in a contract research organization (CRO) or a pharmaceutical/biopharmaceutical/medical device company
5. Able to read, understand, and follow precisely written protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
6. Able to lift 30 lbs and otherwise be physically able to work within an animal facility
7. Experience with the Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs) and ISO regulations highly desirable
8. Must work well in a group as well as individually
9. Must be flexible with working hours
10. Experience with computer terminals, electronic data capture software, and laboratory equipment essential
11. Experience with ISO-required in vivo biocompatibility studies for medical devices
Responsibilities:
The Biocompatibility Biologist will perform all in-life procedures necessary for the successful completion of Regulatory Toxicology studies including, but not limited to, evaluation of health status, measurement of feed consumption and body weight, blood collection, urine collection, and test article administration by various routes (eg oral gavage, capsule, intravenous, intramuscular, intraperitoneal, subcutaneous).  The position requires the professional application of the principles, theories, and techniques of animal research, animal handling, animal care, and toxicology.  Once trained, the Biocompatibility Biologist III will be responsible for the following (according to the appropriate SOPs): 
1. Act as the Lead on Biocompatibility studies and working closely with the Study Director
2. Handling all laboratory animals correctly and humanely to avoid injury to self or the animal
3. Recording raw data electronically or on worksheets and log books in a timely and accurate manner
4. Preparing animals for procedures (eg shaving, weighing, sedation)
5. Performing various procedures, which may include injections, application of skin patches, and implantation of test substances, clinical observations, and the collection of body fluids
6. Performing all assigned work in a timely manner, insuring that all tasks are completed
7. Maintaining laboratory equipment and work areas according to ISO/GLP regulations and company SOPs
8. Maintaining open, honest communications with all members of the study team
9. Assuring that the preparation of test articles or extracts have been done in accordance with the protocol prior to administration to test animals
10. Understanding the proper and safe use of hazardous chemicals
11. Understanding the proper and safe handling of potentially pathogenic materials
